Discordian Cyberspace Masquerade [19 May 2008|02:23pm]

I know this might not be entirely on-topic. But...

So I got this e-mail about something cool going on in Discordia. I think it's such a great idea that I'm taking it upon myself to tell LJ about it.

Hail Yes

I hadn't even realized it was Discordia's 50th (or 49th) anniversary. This is cool 'cause we get to celebrate the 50 year mark for two years in a row. It's our Golden Apple anniversary. =)

I love the idea of an online party which brings together Discordians from all sections of the web. It's also cool that it's anonymous. It'll make communicaiton really interesting. I created this journal so that nobody suspects my true identity. :-)

Anyway, there's not a lot of time until the party starts, so I'm trying to pass the invite around as quickly as possible. If you have any ideas for where else we should advertise, please post! Or optimally, you should go there and get some buzz going.

I'll see you guys at the party! Hail Eris!

Is it still possible to google bomb? [12 Feb 2008|05:49pm]

[ mood | content ]

Does anyone know if google bombs still work or if someone has found a way to work around Google trying to stop them? Or do they still generally work but that only a small portion of them get caught by Google in trying to not allow them to work?

The old war protest song “Fortunate Son” be Creedence Clearwater Revival has lyrics that hint at the class differences between people….whatever happened to those songs? This song by CCR was very popular (maybe number 2 on the billboard charts)…but these days what popular songs address class differences as well as this one?  I am bit surprised at the lack of songs that address issues of class (or society in general).  I am not a child of the 60s or 70s, but a part of me admires the people of those decades who produced and consumed such politically relevant material.

Help! [09 Jun 2007|05:46pm]

this isn't exaaaactly the right community, but it's the closest I can think of. I'm trying to research some companies, but I can't figure out how to find parent companies. Sometimes sites will list subsidiaries of a company, but I can't seem to find complete lists, and it's even hard to find out who a company is a subsidiary of! I tried the SEC website, but everything was in crazy legalese, and involved sorting through hundreds of pages of reports, and I don't even know if it had the information. Anyone know how to find this info?

Iraq, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, Russia ... they treat journalists badly, right? [23 Nov 2006|01:18pm]

Sanfrancisco, California, United States of America ... different, right?

Free Josh Wolf | blog | wiki

A letter from Josh's mom; please copy and forward everywhere

Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2006 08:01:44 -0800 (PST)
From: Liz Wolf-Spada <liz_wolf_spadaATyahoo.com>
Subject: Jailed Video Journalist Josh Wolf To: AskDOJ@usdoj.com

Dear US Attorney Gonzales,

My 24 year old son, Josh Wolf, has been in jail for 90 days because he is not willing to testify about who was present at a demonstration in San Francisco on July 8, 2005.

Josh and his lawyers offered to let the judge see the unedited video tape to prove that it had nothing on it related to the supposed "alleged attempted arson" of an SFPC police car. The judge refused. To balance the rights of a free press, I believe the judge should have been willing to review the tape, seen that there was no attempted burning of a police car and let the case drop. The only damage to the car was a damaged tail light. That is according to the report of the San Francisco police department. Yes, people had firecrackers and fireworks at the demonstration. It was, after all, only 4 days after the Fourth of July.
DetailsCollapse )

With serious problems facing our country in the area of national security, I think it is much more important that our government continue to pursue Bin Laden and not focus on protestors in San Francisco who are exercising their first amendment rights.

Please do what you can to get my son out of jail. The judge is US District Court Judge William Alsup. Josh's lawyer will be asking for a Thanksgiving furlough for Josh tomorrow, Tuesday, November 22, as well as asking for Judge Alsup to end this imprisonment of my son. My father, Josh's grandfather, is 87 years old and very frail with 24 hour live in care. Josh would really like to see him and of course worries that he could pass away while he is in jail.

Thank you for your consideration and Happy Thanksgiving,

Yours, Liz Wolf-Spada A Concerned Mom, Teacher and Citizen

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but hey, it's worth a shot right? Maybe? Anyways, I'm currently in my last term of film school in Vancouver, BC and we are to produce, direct, and edit our own 10 minute movie. I'm interested on doing a documentary on the relation between violence in media and youth violence vs. a child's upbringing/nurture and youth violence. It is rather large subject for only 10 minutes, so I was wondering if you had any suggestions? tips? What would you focus on? Etc.

Thanks greatly!

I’m 7.5 months pregnant and looking for children’s books, baby’s books, and children’s/baby’s movies/shows that are enjoyable, educational, have good politics, and strong female characters. I’ve already thought of a few but I’m looking to stock up on stuff in the last couple of months before I give birth… any suggestions?

Hello everyone,

I'm interested in people's opinions on the Adbusters Black Spot sneaker....I'm conducting an academic study as part of the PhD program at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. The Black Spot is one of the products I'm looking at. If you'd like to be part of the study, I'd need about an hour of your time, by phone, for an interview. You'd be given a pseudonym so your anonymity will be protected, and I'd call you at a time convenient to you. The study is being written up for an academic journal to help other researchers learn about consumer insights.

If you own a pair of Black Spots (or have very strong opinions about it) and are over 18 years of age, and can help out with this study, please email me at mmatear@business.queensu.ca

I would really appreciate your assistance; Thanks,

Fight DRM [11 Jun 2006|12:54am]

couldn't sleep, found this on digg and just thought it sounded like something worth sharing.

"The only people who can influence either group are the retailers that carry the DRM'ed dvd's and cd's. If by chance, millions of people were to, on the same day and within the same three hour period, purchase a number of DRM'ed disks, then walk out the door then back in and return the merchandise, it would cause havoc in the retail world for that day."

and more importantly - nothing on the internet is sacred - nothing is private - our information (most of it) is sold.

this is 100% for real and 100% frightening - spread the word to those you love.

Repost EVERYWHERE [30 Apr 2006|11:32pm]

I know TV Turn Off Week was the 24th to the 30th, but one more time!!!

Repost this to your friend lists, but reupload image, hotlinking will break it!!!!!

I'd like everyone to participate, as a social experiment. See how you feel after just ONE week, beginning this Wednesday.

Isn't there something wrong with the world when we wonder what's happening to fictional characters throughout the week? Isn't it wrong when a Sunday night cartoon on Fox is important in our life? Isn't it wrong when there are so many experiences to be had, but we just can't be bothered with real life because we're sitting zoned out in front of the tube? Isn't it wrong when we're away from our techno-universe and we begin to panic? The next generation won't even know the joy of building mud pies and creating cities of legos or playing telephone with a papercup and a string if we don't do something about it NOW. We let things slide, we procrastinate, we just sit there zombified in front of this little box, watching the little world within, while the real world and our real lives go ignored. TURN IT OFF FOR JUST ONE WEEK! And pass this on to your friends and definitely to your children! Get your coworkers and your classmates involved as well!!!

Go swimming, go camping, have lunch with an old friend or write a letter to your grandmother. Just LIVE and stop procrastinating, and remember the scent of flowers and what it's like to feel your toes in the summer lawn.

look it's a newb! [28 Apr 2006|01:10am]

Hi, first time poster here. Just joined up to ask some advice/tips on putting up message-stickers around in public facilities.

yeah, this is probably like Culture Jamming 101, basically I finally decided I had enough of a lot of things in my community and the fact that nobody seemed to give a shit about any of it enough to change it...such as the horrible public transport system, gossip/fashion magazines advertised on shop windows that seem to insult our intelligence, clothing stores that turn the majority of teenage girls (and those who can't seem to grow up) into clones in mini skirts, etc...

With little skills or resources to make hardcore posters or banners to express my anger, I bought a roll of small, white stickers -the sort you stick on your shirt with your name written on it at meetings- and started writing out a dozen messages.

I've stuck them on some bus stops around the CBD as well as a few magazine stands. After a few days ome have been ripped off (whether people were offended by the message or by the act of 'vandalising' or were just plain bored while waiting for the bus and wanted to rip something, I don't know). I want to keep doing this until maybe I see people start noticing it or commenting it on it; if it could inspire even a few people into thinking about something it would mean so much to me.

So anyway, what I wanted to ask was, what are some tips to keep sticking messages around the city without getting caught? Or do people even care when they see you doing it? What's the furthest you've gone to stick up a note? (i.e risked getting caught, 'damaging' merchandise or property) I have this great idea I want to do on some display inside a Glassons store, would it be too foolish for me to stick some messages right inside and expect for it to last long enough?
